Lighting, mood, and setting all play a part. Here's how I pick the perfect backdrop...
Location, Location, Location...but is it really?
The location may not necessarily make or break a portrait session. What qualifies as a beautiful backdrop depends on one’s perspective and is primarily about creating an environment that enhances your subject and tells their story.
Lighting Considerations
Natural light is often the most flattering for portraits so I look for locations with- Open shade for even, soft lighting- Golden hour opportunities for that warm, golden or dramatic light- Reflective surfaces that can bounce light
Background Elements
The background should complement the subject, not compete with it. - A spot might be beautiful on its own, but consider- If the colors work with your subject's clothing?- If the surrounding textures add visual interest without taking away from the person in focus?- If there's space for separation to blur out a busy background?
Other Considerations
If possible, do your homework before the shoot to eliminate any surprises such as, - Accessibility issue for your subject or equipment- Lack of weather protection or backup options- Required permits or permissions- Privacy and comfort for your subject
The best locations often come from scouting trips or sometimes by a happy accident. It’s always wise to have a backup plan, just in case!
