01

Build Rapport Before Shooting

As simple as it sounds, having a chat with your client beforehand is one of the easiest and most effective things you can do before picking up the camera. It helps break the ice, lets you learn about their interests, and gives you insight into what they hope to achieve from the session. This connection will always shine through in their photos.

02

Create a Comfortable Environment

Whether you're shooting in a studio or on location, make sure the space feels inviting.

Play some music they enjoy, keep the temperature comfortable, and have some candy or refreshments available.

Small touches like these make a big difference.

03

Give Clear, Positive Direction

Phrases such as “look natural” often don’t help non-professionals.

Instead, offer specific, encouraging guidance by saying things like, “Tilt your head slightly toward the light,” or “Think of something that makes you smile.”

Clear direction helps your client feel confident and at ease.

04

Use Posing as Conversation

Turn posing into a collaborative experience. Ask your client to try different positions, and let them know what looks great.

This approach makes them feel involved rather than just instructed, helping to create more genuine expressions.

05

Take Breaks and Show Progress

Breaks prevent fatigue, and showing the client some of the great shots you're getting builds their confidence and excitement for the session.
